Marine Animal Entanglements Response

Entanglements are one of the main causes of death and serious injuries in large whales worldwide. For 40 years the Center for Coastal Studies located in Provincetown has been in the front line for whale disentanglement response, releasing from life threatening entanglement more than 200 whales, from North Atlantic Right whales to minke whales and humpbacks, as well as sea turtles.

Paulette Durazo is a member of both Marine Animal Entanglement Response team and the Humpback Whale Studies Program with more than 10 years working with marine mammals in the east coast of the USA and Mexico. During this talk she will discuss entanglement impacts on vulnerable populations that seasonally inhabit the Gulf of Maine, such the North Atlantic Right whale and humpback whales; together with an overview of the work the CCS has done in understanding the entanglement issue.
