Bouillabaisse: Youth Fishing & Scavenger Hunt Recap

Our one week delay of this event proved to be a good decision as we were blessed with sunny skies and light southwest winds. Five boats filled with OAC youth anglers spent this past Friday evening in search of various species including: bluefish, scup, fluke, sea bass, crabs, minnows and clams! Ashley Walantis won 1st for the younger youth with a 1.6 lb scup. Maeve Bedenkop collected the most species with a total of 7. Nick Swaylik got a slam by catching fluke, sea bass and scup. Lindsay Lewis landed a nice 10.15 lb bluefish to take 1st for the older crowd. Everyone enjoyed pizza back at the club.

Thanks to Andy Little from Powderhorn Outfitters in Hyannis. He showed up to the event with rod & reel combos, tackle and prizes for all the kids. Andy has been a great supporter of our youth events.

Offshore Report

Attached are a couple nice Mako sharks caught recently by OAC members. First is Sam Jaxtimer with a 191 lb Mako caught on board Thresher. The other was caught by GW Bridge on a recent trip with Captain Terry Nugent of Riptide Charters.

Member Todd Walantis crewed on a boat for the Nantucket Bluefin Blast. His boat released 17 tuna during the 2 day tournament this past weekend, good enough to take 4th overall.

OAC New Record False Albacore

Here is a nice shot of Bruce Cunningham and his 13.05 lb albie. For many years the OAC record was held by Ken Cirillo at 8.25 lbs. About a month ago, GW Bridge smashed the record with a 12 lber. However, it didn’t take long for that record to be dethroned. Great Fish!

OAC Derby

This past week there have lots of weigh ins for the 2012 OAC Derby. Remember, all OAC members are automatically included in the derby. Catch one of the nine species and weigh it at a local tackle shop and report it to the club manager.  Rob and Mary Miller weighed a couple of nice bass during the OAC/HAC Shootout and Charlie Richmond had 1st in blues for the tournament which also lands him in 1st for blues in the derby. Paul Pinard caught a great bass on Monday’s Ron Murphy trip and that places him in 1st for bass at 31.80 lbs. There have been some great funny fish caught, including a new club record by G.W. Bridge, a nice 12 lb albie. I am told there has been another monster albie caught that will be weighed this afternoon. Sam Jaxtimer and Ken Cirillo also weighed a pair of Mako sharks. OAC/HAC Shootout

HAC anglers simply caught bigger bass and won the annual OAC/HAC Shootout. Mother Nature delivered a picture perfect weather day and most of the 12 boat fleet were scattered out on the rips at Monomoy. Thank you to Tournament Chair Bruce Cunningham. He spent a tremendous amount of time working with Hyannis to pull this tournament off. Also, thank you to HAC for hosting the Captains meeting and an awards dinner following the tournament. Here are the results:

Bouillabaisse: Youth Fishing & Scavenger Hunt This Friday

This event is for our youth members and friends (15 years old and under) this Friday from 4-8 pm. Our older youth can fish for bass, blues, scup, sea bass or any other of the derby species. The younger crowd can collect as many sea creatures that they can find (clams, snails, crabs, fish, etc). Fishing from 40in with pizza and awards back at the club starting at 7pm. There is no cost for this event (thanks again to our corporate sponsors) and you do not need to register. Simply take your kids, grandkids and their friends out on the water (by boat or at the beach) and bring what you catch or find back to the club for a weigh in at 7pm.

OAC member GW Bridge caught a 12 lb False Albacore south of the Vineyard this past week. This great catch places GW in 1st for albies in our derby and also sets a new OAC club record for the leader board on the wall in the club. Great fish!
